Chapter 32
âI swear that son of a bitch De Gaulte is going to get it in the end. I almost pity him for it,â Theodore Varbossa growled.
âI thought we agreed he was the best for the job?â Sydney Knowls, Viscount of Telemark asked. He was one of the junior-most lords. He was also the heaviest, prone to overeating and drinking.
âI am. But you can't blame me for being pissed at someone for losing as much as he has. But it's not just his fault. The man on the throne has played his part. You heard he's now taking credit for getting the Admiralty to send out more resources and ships?â
âToo little too late for Dead Drop and elsewhere,â Bree Stuart grumbled.
âYeah, you'd think Newberry would be pushing hard for help to get to Garth since she has a stake in it, but she apparently came up short until now,â another lord grumbled.
Bree Stuart nodded along with some of the others, but as she did she sat back and considered the company she was keeping. There were a dozen lords, many of them minor, some major. They each represented one of the ruling families.
They all knew that they were only allies of the moment. Each would turn on another if the opportunity for advancement would arise from it. She could see that they were all angry over the losses. Angry and frightened. Some of them had gone from seeing it as a way to embarrass and tear down the Ramichov line and those who supported them to recognizing a genuine threat that could end them all.
âSomething has to be done before it is too late. The idiots in charge are leading us into destruction,â Sydney snarled.
The room grew quiet. Sydney was a bit of a fool, sometimes a loud mouth. No one was foolish enough to not think that the Stazi and Imperial Intelligence were somehow monitoring the meeting.
âCareful,â a lord murmured after a full minute passed.
The word treason was left unspoken, but several eyes went to Bree. As a Stuart her family was aligned with the Ramichov line.
âSomeone has to say something. I'm only speaking the truth,â Sydney said, jutting his double chin out indignantly. âDon't tell me you aren't thinking it yourselves!â
âTruth doesn't always set you free. Sometimes truth gets you killed. Exercise a modicum of caution in that regard,â Theodore said firmly.
âI heard that the Tuckets are considering finding greener pastures far from here,â Evin Frost said snidely, changing the subject.
âGood,â Count Jason McAllen, head of the Naval Affairs Committee stated with a shrug. He wasn't certain how the prime minister's departure could play in his favor, but the opening should make things interesting.
He personally didn't want it. But he could play his support to those who curried favor to get the posting. Not that he was certain anyone wanted it these days. It was just a lightning rod for trouble.
âWe should consider joining them. Before it is too late.â
âNo, not good,â Bree Stuart said patiently. âTucket is interested in maintaining his power base.
